You may have read my previous post about Shoal Creek and how important I think it is to the city and the neighborhoods along Shoal Creek. So I want to also tell you that I’m on the Host Committee of the 2018 Shoal Creek Awards, and I’d like to invite you to attend or sponsor the event!
The 4th Annual Awards will be on May 8th, 2018, from 5:30-7:30pm, at Cirrus Logic in downtown Austin. It’s a pretty casual happy hour style reception with food and drinks donated by restaurants like Bonhomie, Bufalina Pizza, and House Park BBQ.
This is a major fundraiser for the Conservancy, since sponsorships and ticket sales support the Conservancy’s year-round work in the watershed. Here’s an idea of what they’ve been up to over the past year:
- Worked with community members to create a plan for improving and extending the Shoal Creek Trail, laying the foundation for a 30+ mile “Big Loop” of urban trail connecting neighborhoods around the city.
- Kicked off a project to design creative and cooperative solutions to Shoal Creek’s water-related challenges, such as flooding, erosion, diminished spring flow, habitat loss, and more.
- Unveiled an Undertold Historic Marker commemorating the Wood Street Historic Settlement along Shoal Creek, once home to formerly enslaved peoples and generations of Mexican American residents.
Please consider supporting the Conservancy by sponsoring or attending the event! If you haven’t been involved with the Conservancy, this is a great way to start learning about what they do. This is a great cause and an exciting opportunity to be involved in something that has significant implications to the livability of Austin. I think it is worth your time and I hope you’ll join me on May 8th, and will consider supporting the Conservancy in some capacity whether you can make it to the Awards event or not.
